Students from Cerritos College show off hours of practice at Jazz and Pop/Rock Spring Concert

Students from the Cerritos College Music Department held its annual Jazz and Pop Rock Spring Concert playing a mixture of classic and modern music.

The concert was held in the Burnight Theatre on May 14th for friends and famliys of the students.

The music students have been preparing for the concert for the entire semester and that the show was a chance to use all the skills that they learned.

Gregory Farrell was one of the main singers of the night who performed during the Jazz emsemble in the first act, and the Pop/Rock emsemble in the second.

“It’s very nervewracking, before hand you have to come to all the rehersals, you have to make sure you have your music ready.”

Click here for a slideshow of the event: http://www.talonmarks2.com/multimedia_reporting_sp14/concertslideshow2/

For me as a singer I can’t have sheet music in front of me. I have to remember everything so it’s kind of hard to just be like “Okay I have to know this song, that song, that song and just get ready, so I just have to be ready and prepared.” Said Farrell.

Krystal Munoz said that the concert required “virgourous” preparation to be ready.

On top of the hours of practice the students also had the added task of helping in selecting the music for the show.

“In other emsembles the director comes up with pieces and he’s the one who comes up with the program and chooses the songs we’re going to do, said Munoz.

“But for us we had a list of about sixteen or more and we had to slim it down to seven. It was hard but we did it.”

Dr. David Betancourt, the Director of Band and Orchestra, said that the concert tries to bring in a variety of styles.

“You’re going to hear everything. From the jazz group you’re going to hear some big band charts like from the 1940’s.” said Betancourt.

“You’re going to hear some more modern big band arrangements, some vocal charts. And from the pop group your going to hear some sort of songs from the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, 2000’s and some stuff that just came out.”

Jazz, Pop and Rock were chosen to give students a chance to play something different than the usual classical playlists.

“That style of music, doing stuff that is on the radio, that’s not jazz or not classical not a lot schools do that. More are starting to come around and do that, said Betancourt,

“They are seeing the value in learning what is called the general business of music. You know, what you hear on the radio, at the wedding, things you hear at functions, things like that.”

Farrell said he liked playing with both bands but both have challenges in how they have to be approached.

“The jazz band is more of a freestyle, freelance type music. I have a lot more freedom to sing how I feel, more expression. As (for) the pop/rock I have to sing what’s written, also on the other hand I get to have fun with some of the songs I’m singing.”

Overall the students feel that the music program at Cerritos helped prepare them for the challenges of the show.

“It’s a great program honestly, said Munoz, I studied privately here this semester.”

“I was in the applied program. This program compared to other schools I’ve gone to it’s a great program to be in. I’ve grown. Honestly my first semester, what I done here tonight, I couldn’t have done before. I wouldn’t have succeeded. I probably would have crashed and burned. I grew a lot here.”

Many of the students credited Dr. Betancourt for always being available to guide them.

Betancourt has been at Cerritos for fifteen years, which is the same amount of time the spring concert has been held at Cerritos.

“What I really appreciate is Dr. Betancourt, said Colin Monaco, because he’s always there to answer any questions we have.”

“He’s always there for us even if it’s just jazz theory, he’ll help us out.”

(Dr. Betancourt’s) a great director honestly. He just doesn’t involved himself in his emsembles, said Munoz, “He helps me out. He taught me a lot honestly jazz-wise. Especially jazz-wise I’ve grown because of Dr. Betancourt. The way he pushes us he’s great.”

Daniel Green’s Portfolio

When I started this project I intended to focus on music and arts around Cerritos College. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to stay focused on that and drifted to other topics. I do think that despite this fact I actually learned more by expanding the topics I covered. It allowed me to work with different people and cover a variety of topics.

I feel that the work I have done for my site has given me a strong sense of what is needed in today’s field of journalism. I have done everything from audio stories, picture shows, articles and graphs. I still have a lot to learn but making mista

My name is Daniel Green, a journalism student at Cerritos College. This blog was created for my Multimedia Class. The class is focused on training students to become more profiecient in different forms of multimedia that are common in journalism today. For my class project I had to create blog and choose a topic to cover for the entire semester.

Besides the blog I have been on the school paper Talon Marks for two semesters. I was the Associate News Editor my first semester and was promoted to News Editor during my second. I was voted one of the best rookies of the semester during my first semseter which came with a scholarship. Besides the projects on this page I have experience working with InDesign to create and design pages.

Marvel’s “Original Sin” exposes the secrets of its heroes

Marvel Comic’s released the first issue of its latest crossover event “Original Sin” last and the first taste seems to indicate this will be a big one.

It has become yearly practice for Marvel to come up with a big idea that pulls in all of its most popular characters into one story.

Unfortunately the last few events have not been as strong as they once were. However Marvel seems to have worked hard to build up to “Original Sin”.

The overarching theme for this event has to do with secrets and their cost. Even superheroes can have their skeletons that they rather keep in their closet. However Marvel has hinted that these secrets will stepping in to the daylight and they will have severe consequences for everyone involved.

While many of the secrets are not yet known, readers of the comics can probably expect some of the storylines they have been following to be resolved in “Original Sin”.

Marvel has done a great job of laying the groundwork for this event. Many of the stories they have been telling leading up to this event have had different characters make life or death choices.

The story by Jason Aaron reads like a murder mystery rather than a traditional comic book. Aaron does a good job of setting up a dark gritty tone. The comic moves at a fast pace setting up the pieces quickly, but not so fast as to seem rushed.

The art for the book adds to the tone that the author is going for. Artist Mike Deodato and Colorist Frank Martin work well together and give the book the right look that could fit in a noir detective movie.

Despite the down-to-earth feel of the book there are big fight scenes throughout the book and the artists manage to make them look big and spectacular.

Deodato manages to draw scenes that pop out and grab the reader’s attention and help lend gravity to some of the more serious scenes.

Overall “Original Sin is shaping up to be an interesting look in to the sins of those who are suppose to stand for truth and justice.

Focus on Michael Sam personal life unfortunate but unavoidable

While the draft of Michael Sam to the Saint Louis Rams is a good thing it unfortunate that is still a big issue in today’s society.

Sam, who was drafted by the Saint Louis Rams is officially the first openly gay player in the NFL.

The reaction to the pick has been both positive and negative.

The head coach of the Rams Jeff Fisher responded by saying “ We drafted a good football player,”

On the other side some have tweeted angry remarks and have criticized ESPN for showing a kiss between Sam and his boyfriend after hearing that he was drafted.

While we should be acknowledging that this is a big step for acceptance of gays in our country it is still sad that Sam is in the spotlight due to his orientation.

Professional athletes should be making news for their performance on the field not than their private lives.

It’s unfortunate that Sam’s private life has become part of the public debate over the morality of homosexuality. However as being the first open gay player in a sport known for masculinity comes with baggage.

He will have to deal with people who think it is okay to make jokes about his private life and what he does in the locker room.

Just today a defensive end from the Miami Dolphin’s was for tweeting that it was “horrible” that ESPN would showed the kiss between Sam and his boyfriend.

A point guard from the University of Mississippi Marshall Henderson drew criticism after tweeting that he was boycotting Sportscenter using the hashtag #sickening.

Henderson would later go on to claim that his tweets were part of a school project for a friend.

These kind of reactions are sadly the reason that we need to acknowledge Sam’s personal life.

Their reactions are embarrassing and wrong. We should be bring attention to these comments.

It may be hard but the only way we can move forward is to bring these attitudes and prejudices to the forefront. There is no excuse for this type of treatment today and as long as we tolerate it we only allow it to fester and grow.

Student’s struggle to balance of life and school can cause stress

All semester college students try to keep up with class work while balancing other priorities in their lives.

Finals week is the true test of the skills and knowledge students have mastered throughout the semester.

“Between work and sixteen units it’s pretty stressful” said Eric Delatore.

Obviously this can be stressful for students who have to balance their each class with work, family and friends.

It is not uncommon for students to find themselves struggling to cope with the stress the final weeks of school can cause.

Robert Lonvelin, a student at Cerritos College the workload can be a struggle to deal with.

“There’s a lot of stress especially when you’re taking like four classes and it all like comes in at once. It really gets stressful.”

Even experienced college students can find that the stress of finals week can differ from semester to semester.

“I (usually) feel stressed but this semester I feel really calm. On a scale of one to ten I feel five (or) six.” Said, Occupational Therapy major, Destinee Bernal.

There are many ways that students can reduce relieve some of their pent up frustration.

One of the most popular ways is by staying active such as working out or just going for a walk.

“I work out. Running helps a lot. Just going out. Said Bernal Try to keep your mind of things. Like take a lot of study breaks. ”

Planning study time and preparing for finals weeks beforehand can also help student feel prepared which can help alleviate stress.

Typically what I try to do is take small breaks while I study.  Other than that there’s no way. It’s hard to avoid stress.  Said Lonvelin.

Of course having some kind of reward for after finals can help give students a reason to stay on track and gives them something to work towards.

Bernal says that she plans to celebrate and have fun after finals are over.

“I’m going to go to Utah for a week right (my) final’s done. Go hiking and camping. So that’s how I’m going to do it with a big bang.”

One group of students who can be hit hardest by finals are first time college students.

Delatore said the most important thing for them to remember is that college has new demands and expectations.

“Focus, it’s not like high school. I mean you can choose what you want to do, but it’s college now. It’s time to focus.”

Along with focus new students should plan out their schedules and not expect too much of themselves.

“Make sure they really know how to plan out their schedule of what their going to do and how they’re going to do it.”  Said Lonvelin

“And just to be careful not to take too many difficult classes at once and just  make sure you don’t get a full time job because if you get a job full time it ‘s going to be very difficult from my experience.”

It’s been said that one can tell a lot about society from the way that it treats its weakest members. Unfortunately our society has not always been kind to the mentally ill when they have needed help.

While things have approved since the past there is still a massive stigma against those with mental illness.

You only have to look at our media to see how people who are considered “crazy” are portrayed.

Some are shown as violent and dangerous such as the Joker in “The Dark Knight” who describes himself as an “agent of chaos”.

They are also used to make jokes and draw a laugh from the audidence. One of the most popular shows on television “The Big Bang Theory” uses character Sheldon Cooper. While it is never said that Cooper has any psychological issues it is heavily implied he does which is always used to amuse the audience.

The problem is that this helps reenforce the idea that there is something wrong with having mental problems.

Daryl Valdez, a music major, says that he persoally does not treat these people differently than anyone else and that he knows someone with down syndrome.

“I personally just view them like I view everybody else unless you see them and they need help.”

Valdez admitted that he does tend to use words like sick and crazy in his normal vocabulary, but tries not to use words like retarded.

“I guess we really don’t think about that as negative anymore. I guess those words are now more of a positive in the way people use them. But retarded has become a word that people are more aware of using.”

Kimberly Mora, a kinesiology major, said that her friends brother has bi-polar disorder.

He gets really angry and doesn’t really kow when to stop. It’s kind of sad because the way his parents treat him, they’re really strict on him.”

“His sister, one of my best friends, is tired of it and gets really mad at him. It’s like it’s not his fault. You have to be patient with him.”

Valdez believes that in some ways society is helpful, “but at the same time I feel like (society) discriminates against them.”

Society’s view of mental illness has had a negative effect on those with mental illness and it’s up to society to change its views.

Daniel Green’s Resume

Learning from my first video story

I feel that my first video project went pretty well considering I did not have a lot of experience doing it. It was a lot like regular reporting in trying to get people to talk to us and give their opinions.

While I liked our video overall I think we could have done a better job with storytelling. Taking footage and arranging it in to a coherent story that flows well is harder than it looks. It takes more than cutting footage to fit a certain amount of time. The interviewing portion was easy since I have experience and all we needed was for students to tell us how they felt about distracted driving.

I feel that the editing process went smoothly. It can be hard at time since everyone in the group can have different ideas on how best to arrange footage. Overall our group got along well and we all listened to each other’s ideas. The hardest part about the editing process is trying to figure out what footage to keep and cutting it down. Sometimes you have good footage but it adds nothing and makes the video longer. Other times you have good footage you can’t use for one reason or another.

For my final project I will try to plan out and research the story I want to tell. I will also give myself more time to work on the project and arrange everything so it flows well and looks good. By doing this I believe that I will be able to create a great final project.

Donald Sterling is bad for the Clippers franchise and the whole NBA

Donald Sterling’s racist comments this weekend were indefensible and fans need to let the NBA know that this is not acceptable behavior.

Sterling drew attention this weekend when audio recordings were released of him making racist remarks about African-Americans.

The recordings included comments where Sterling lecturing his girlfriend for associating with African-Americans.

It’s hard to believe that the owner of a NBA franchise would not only have these deplorable opinions, but would be dumb to allow them to become public.

The majority of NBA players is African American and the fact that Sterling holds these opinions while these men sacrifice their time, energy and money is tragic.

All of this could not come at a worse time as the Clippers are trying to remain in the playoffs.

It makes a challenging dilemma as obviously these players want to win and become champions, however do they want to do it for this franchise?

By winning these players bring money and fame to not only their team but to Sterling as well.

Many have said that the NBA should step in and remove Sterling however that is easier said than done.

While the NBA may not be able to force Sterling to sell his history of racial problems make it obvious that something must be done.

Since the tapes release other stories have come out revealing that this has been a problem for many years.

In 2009 Sterling was sued by former Clippers general manager Elgin Baylor, who said that Sterling had a “Plantation attitude”.

The Department of Justice also brought charges against Sterling for allegedly not renting apartment in his complex to African-Americans, which he settled out of court.

Looking back at these event it is easy to see a pattern in regards to Sterling’s attitude.

The best way to for Sterling out is to hit him and the Clippers franchise in the wallet.

While it may be tough to do, especially while the Clippers in the playoffs, fans need to protest the game. If the franchise loses money they will have to react and find a way to force Sterling to sell.

It may be tough at first but removing the poisonous limb that is Donald Sterling will be good for the whole.
