It’s been said that one can tell a lot about society from the way that it treats its weakest members. Unfortunately our society has not always been kind to the mentally ill when they have needed help.
While things have approved since the past there is still a massive stigma against those with mental illness.
You only have to look at our media to see how people who are considered “crazy” are portrayed.
Some are shown as violent and dangerous such as the Joker in “The Dark Knight” who describes himself as an “agent of chaos”.
They are also used to make jokes and draw a laugh from the audidence. One of the most popular shows on television “The Big Bang Theory” uses character Sheldon Cooper. While it is never said that Cooper has any psychological issues it is heavily implied he does which is always used to amuse the audience.
The problem is that this helps reenforce the idea that there is something wrong with having mental problems.
Daryl Valdez, a music major, says that he persoally does not treat these people differently than anyone else and that he knows someone with down syndrome.
“I personally just view them like I view everybody else unless you see them and they need help.”
Valdez admitted that he does tend to use words like sick and crazy in his normal vocabulary, but tries not to use words like retarded.
“I guess we really don’t think about that as negative anymore. I guess those words are now more of a positive in the way people use them. But retarded has become a word that people are more aware of using.”
Kimberly Mora, a kinesiology major, said that her friends brother has bi-polar disorder.
He gets really angry and doesn’t really kow when to stop. It’s kind of sad because the way his parents treat him, they’re really strict on him.”
“His sister, one of my best friends, is tired of it and gets really mad at him. It’s like it’s not his fault. You have to be patient with him.”
Valdez believes that in some ways society is helpful, “but at the same time I feel like (society) discriminates against them.”
Society’s view of mental illness has had a negative effect on those with mental illness and it’s up to society to change its views.
